Utah Legislature starts today!

I'm a bit terrified and nervous about the legislature starting today. I have been interning with the senate since October however, I do not feel ready for the storm that is about to take place. A storm can bring good things, such as needed rain and progress for the land.. however a storm can also do a lot of damage. I'm hoping that the legislature will bring us continued progress here in Utah.

I am the office manager for the senate at the east building at the capitol. My office is huge and gorgeous! I will post photos soon. My job is to manage an office of just me and to work with lobbyists, senators, and citizens to provide them with any information that they may need. I will be perched at my desk with most likely a soda in hand, 50 tabs opened up on google chrome on my computer, and I will be google chatting my counterpart who is working over in the senate chambers, Kirsten Frank.

I was hired as a communications intern, it seemed fit to have me in the east building as an office manager. I was told, "10% of the time you'll be working at an office manager, the other 90% you'll be working on social media for the senate." FINE BY ME! I love being involved and being here.

It's interesting working here while being in the mindset of a journalist, I wish I could waste more then half of my time meeting other reporters and networking however that would be anything but okay to do on company time. Whenever I see the reporters up on capitol hill, I yearn to be them. I also get really excited whenever I see anyone from the Salt Lake Tribune because the tribune gave me a scholarship to help me fund my education this year.

I will be honest with you all, before this job, I knew little to nothing about government and I still have a lot to learn. However, it is amazing to be in a work environment when I can see these senators and officials interact with others and talk to them myself and to see them through my eyes in comparison of through the eyes of the media.

I want to update my blog about what I am learning at the senate, however due to confidentiality reasons there is not much I will be able to say until after my internship is completed. I will be keeping a private journal of my endeavors. I am a non-partisan staff member and I am not affiliated with either political party. I value the opinions of others and I look forward to meeting whoever comes by my office and gladly having a conversation. Please feel free to come by and visit me, I would love to hear about your stories and experiences.
